Lean Business Mentor

I have worked all my career in Business Analysis and Process improvement.  What always strikes me is that through my career the emphasis has moved from Total Quality Management to Business Process Engineering through World Class Manufacturing to Six Sigma Lean Six Sigma and the Toyota production System TPS.

While the names have changed the techniques being used to achieve safety efficiency and excellence have not. The core techniques of Lean or what is now often termed Agile or even Digital Enablement are well worn and have a track record of delivering improvement.

While the tools remain the same many of the challenges have not changed either.  It is the engagement of the people and the sustaining of continuous improvement that is the real challenge.  Over my career there are three key ingredients that separate the successful from the also rans.

These are management buy-in and I mean buy-in to the lean principles and not just seeing lean as a means of cost containment. Secondly there is the achievement of some Quick Wins so that people can see the impact quickly.  The running of Kaizen events and the use of the XY Priority Matrix can be key to this.

Finally, there is the visual. Visual in terms of Mapping Processes to allow people to see their activity in the context of delivering customer value and visual management such that there are KPI’s and a measure of the progress on the lean journey.

At a personal level have accepted the war on the car is a battle already lost and have become a keen e-cyclist. I am a year-round sea swimmer.
